Letter from Owen Bieber (President, International Union UAW), Arie R. Brower (General Secretary, National Council of Churches of Christ, NCC), Richard Trumka (President, United Mine Workers of America), and Randall Robinson (Executive Director, TransAfrica) reporting on progress of three years of the boycott of Royal Dutch/Shell. Nearly 100 organizations have endorsed the boycott, including, the NCC, National Association of Black County Officials, United Methodist Church, and National Black Caucus of State Legislators. Several important victories for the Shell Boycott occurred in 1988; Mayor Raymond Flynn of Boston issued an executive order prohibiting his city from purchasing Shell products, and the city council of Berkeley passed a resolution declaring Berkeley a "Shell-Free" city. A mass media campaign was launched using radio public service announcements taped by well-known personalities, including Ed Asner, Tyne Daly, Jesse Jackson, Steven Van Zandt (Little Steven), Jackson Browne, and Danny Glover. People are asked to organize a mass demonstration at local Shell headquarters, regional offices or distributorships, service station, or Shell shareholder's office. The mailing mentions South African security forces, pass laws, a second annual "week of Actions Against Shell," the Sharpeville Massacre, Shell supplying fuel to the South African police and military, and apartheid. [Note: The year on the document is incorrect; all the events in the second paragraph happened in 1988.]
