Rev. Peter Storey, president-elect of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, and six other church leaders came to the United States in March to publicize a report on forced relocations of more than 3.5 million blacks, Indians and "coloreds" (mixed race people) by the South African government, as part of a "larger design or grand strategy" to deny blacks their citizenship and political rights. South African Council of Churches (SACC) and the Southern African Catholics Bishops' Conference published the 63-page report. In Washington, D.C. the church leaders held a press conference and met with Congressional representatives and State Department officials. The Rev. Edward C. May, director of the Lutheran World Ministries' Office of World Community, organized their U.S. visit; they are also visiting Britain and other European countries. The press release mentions South African church leaders from various denominations (the Rev. George F. Daniel, Dr. Hannes Adonis, the Rev. Demetrios J. Palos, the Rev. Brian Germond, the Rev. Raphael Mothe, Rev. Reinhard Schultz), Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Chester Crocker, "constructive engagement," Namibia, the Reagan administration, the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), Bophuthatswana, Transkei, Venda, Ciskei, Bantustans, rebel forces in Angola, and ownership of South Africa's mines, industries, and farms.
