Mailing in support of comprehensive sanctions bills in Congress. The 1986 sanctions law banned only about 18 percent of trade between the U.S. and South Africa and did not call for U.S. companies to pull out of South Africa. People are asked to urge legislators to co-sponsor a stronger bill introduced in 1987 by Representative Ron Dellums and Senator Alan Cranston (House Bill 1580, Senate Bill S556). The new bill calls for complete U.S. corporate withdrawal from South Africa and Namibia within six months, a ban on most trade, and a ban on U.S. intelligence sharing with South Africa. The grassroots movement calling for sanctions was critical to passage of the 1986 bill, including actions of state, county and municipal legislators in passing divestment legislation, of religious and trade union organizations in selling stocks in companies in South Africa, and of students in pushing to distance universities from apartheid. The mailing quotes the National Union of Mineworkers in South Africa calling for international economic pressure and reprints an opinion by William Minter, "Economic sanctions against South Africa are working."
