The leaflet argues that President Bush decided wrongly to lift sanctions against South Africa under the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986. The South African government has not met the five required conditions for lifting sanctions, which involve political prisoners, democratic representation, removal of apartheid legislation, ending the State of Emergency, and acting in good faith in political negotiations and relationships with organizations. Hundreds of political prisoners are still in jail; many Blacks are still being arrested on trumped-up charges; and South African police and military still routinely kill and maim Black citizens without being punished. People are asked to organize to stop sanctions and divestment laws in the Bay Area and California, that prevent billions of dollars from being invested in apartheid South Africa by U.S. corporations, from being lifted, also. The target local governments are Alameda County (Mary King), Berkeley (Mayor Loni Hancock), Contra Costa County (Tom Powers), Oakland (Mayor Elihu Harris), and San Francisco (Mayor Art Agnos). The leaflet argues that President Bush' history of racism policies explains his premature lifting of sanctions. Contact information is through Global Exchange.
