South African Minister of Justice and Police James Kruger claims Steven Biko died on September 12 after a week-long hunger strike. Biko was the robust, 30-year-old first president of the South African Students Organization (SASO) and honorary president of the Black Peoples Convention (BPC). He had been held by the South African Police since August 18. He had for years repeatedly been arrested, brought to trial, and placed under banning orders. The death of Steven Biko is the latest - but not the last - murder committed by the South African regime.
