Letter from Owen Bieber, President, International Union, UAW, and Richard L. Trumka, President, United Mine Workers of America, reports that, in two years, boycott activities have occurred in over 30 cities and have spread to eleven other countries in three continents. There have been many victories; two municipalities in California and Kentucky and several large cities in Europe have passed selective purchasing laws banning purchase of Shell products. Nearly five percent, or $1.4 billion of stock, of the outstanding shares of Royal Dutch Petroleum (a 60-percent owner of Royal Dutch/Shell) have been committed to holding an extraordinary shareholders meeting to vote on a resolution demanding that Royal Dutch/Shell withdraw from South Africa. The National Labor Shell Boycott Committee is calling for a "Week of Actions against Shell" from March 19-26 to commemorate the anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre in 1960. People are urged to organize rallies in front of local Shell headquarters, regional offices or service stations. The mailing includes The Sharpeville Massacre: 28 Years Later, Shell is Still Fueling Apartheid Repression. The mailing mentions the State of Emergency, the banning of the African National Congress (ANC), and the Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC).
