The mailing promotes the 1990 Soweto Day actions against apartheid will be the largest ever in Chicago and throughout the U.S. Soweto Day, the biggest day of protest inside South Africa, commemorates the massacre of school children by the apartheid regime. On June 16, the Labor Network will hold a SOWETO DAY RALLY FOR SANCTIONS chaired by Alderman Jesus Garcia, with speakers Freddie Magugu and Ellen Beaumont, leaders of the South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (SACTWU), an affiliate of COSATU, and a sister union to ACTWU which is sponsoring the visit. This is expected to be the largest ever Soweto Day in Chicago and elsewhere in the U.S. The cutoff of trade, loans, oil and other resources help make apartheid unprofitable and was a key factor in Nelson Mandela's release and other changes; pressure needs to be exerted at this critical time. The rally, immediately after the Walkathon, will focus attention on apartheid's economic dominance in the region of southern Africa. Please urge your members to come, and bring union banners. The mailing includes a leaflet advertising the rally at the Charles A. Hayes Labor and Community Center. The Walkathon is sponsored by the Chicago Committee in Solidarity with Southern Africa (CCISSA), Church World Service, and the Mozambique Support Network. Slogans on the leaflet are "Stand up for South African workers and for U.S. sanctions against South Africa!? and "Join in solidarity with South Africans to commemorate the 1976 massacre of school children in Soweto, S.A."
