The mailing from the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid (ILNAA) offers educational programs about unions in South Africa and growing solidarity between U.S. and South African unions. For example, on March 22, a representative of CATERPILLAR workers in South Africa addressed the UAW rally for striking CAT workers in Peoria; the next day the CAT workers in South Africa began a series of one-hour work stoppages in solidarity with the U.S. strike! Also, the STEELWORKERS and MACHINISTS unions, with help from The Africa Fund in New York, have helped South African workers at Crown, Cork and Seal, a U.S.-based company, negotiate a settlement to rehire 200 fired union members in South Africa. The mailing publicizes the annual Soweto Day Walkathon on June 13, at Malcolm X College in Chicago to raise money for several women's organizations in southern Africa. The mailing includes SOUTH AFRICA: APARTHEID'S DEADLY GAME by ILNAA and an order form for T-shirts and buttons. The mailing mentions Kathy Devine, CODESA (Convention for a Democratic South Africa), the transition process, privatization, mass general strikes, violence, Alexandra Township, and COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions).
