Memorandum to Dick Shoemaker of the United Auto Workers with the text of messages to President Bieber of the United Auto Workers and to Moses Mayekiso, General Secretary of NUMSA (National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa) that were read aloud at the Soweto Day Rally on June 17 in Chicago by Rosetta Daylie of AFSCME Illinois. People at the rally called on the U.S. Senate to pass comprehensive sanctions and for U.S. corporations to pull out of South Africa and to negotiate with unions in South Africa about their withdrawal. The rally followed a Walkathon where more than $14,000 was raised for medical and legal aid for South African detainees. Carl Shier, who walked in the Walkathon, asked that you ensure that the messages are received. The memorandum mentions responsible disinvestment, Harold Rogers, the Free Moses Mayekiso Campaign, the Shell Boycott, Don Stillman, John Christianson, Herman Rebhan, the International Metalworkers' Federation, Bill Stewart, Dick Ziebell, Carol Travis, Mike Flores, Teresa Polk-Henderson, international solidarity, Kola Mayekiso, democratic majority rule, apartheid, racism, and COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions).
