The report says the visit to South Africa by Cole Wright and Kathy Devine is our first; we hope to meet unions, visit worksites, Cosatu, the ANC and others, and report to local unions in Illinois upon return. The report says Our travel is paid by local unions and groups which were part of the Free South Africa Movement; primarily United Auto Workers/UAW Region 4; American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees/AFSCME Illinois; and Coalition of Black Trade Unionists/CBTU-Chicago. The report says Cole, recently retired from United Food and Commercial Workers staff, has long been active in CBTU and Southern African work. KATHY, member of the Newspaper Guild Local 71, works on union and community publications. The report says both are life-long labor and community activists, and were instrumental in forming the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid (chaired by UAW Region 4 and United Steelworkers District 31); Cole on the Steering Committee and Kathy as coordinator. The report discusses COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions), the ANC (African National Congress), Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban.
