A sample resolution and cover letter signed by Johnnie Jackson, President, Chicago Chapter, Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW); Jack Parton, Director, District 31, United Steelworkers of America; and Bill Stewart, Director, United Auto Workers (UAW). The resolution responds to the political violence occurring in South Africa in recent months and reaffirms support for sanctions against South Africa, which are unequivocally supported by South Africa's unions. The letter asks local unions, districts, regions, and other labor affiliates to adopt the resolution as part of a campaign to keep the pressure on South Africa. Congress adopted limited sanctions in 1986 over the veto of President Reagan; the Bush Administration has indicated that it will attempt to lift all or some sanctions soon. The letter says the process to end apartheid is not yet irreversible, and one person-one vote is a long way from being achieved. Sanctions are the most effective way to support South African unions and ensure that progress toward dismantling apartheid continues. Copies of the resolution will be sent to members of the Illinois Congressional delegation, Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), South African President De Klerk, and President Bush. The mailing mentions South African police, democratic organizations, negotiations to end apartheid, KwaZulu Chief Minister Gathsha Buthelezi and his Inkatha movement, murder, arson, independent commission of inquiry, KwaZulu police, the Bantustan system, and F.W. de Klerk.
