The letter from Ros Purnell, Chairperson, Outreach Committee, discusses the formation of UPCARR in the fall of 1976 by people who had been participating in this struggle for many years and who saw the need for a larger organization, capable of waging a stepped-up campaign. Some people had been active in the Coalition to Stop Rhodesian and South African Imports. UPCARR currently is active in the Coalition for Better Transportation in the City, seeing recent attacks on public transportation as flagrant examples of racist oppression in Philadelphia. UPCARR is also waging a vigorous educational campaign around racism in southern Africa and at home, and linking the struggles in a clear, logical way. The mailing publicizes UPCARR's three educational programs to be made available to various Philadelphia groups. The programs will include a series of three films, each with a talk given by a member of UPCAAR or by a representative of a liberation movement in southern Africa; the films are: "Last Grave at Dimbaza," to be presented in April; "A Luta Continua," to be presented in May; and "O Povo Organizado," to be presented in June. UPCAAR is seeking to expand the struggle against apartheid and racism, to involve more people, and to build closer cooperation with other groups in the city, so as to be able to support their work more actively.
