At a SCEF Interim Committee meeting this fall, it was decided to call a conference on the South African coal imports, and an organizing committee was formed to discuss the program and strategy for stopping these imports. A follow-up conference was set for February 1-2 in Atlanta. The enclosed call is being made to those who can unite around: 1) showing the connection between struggles of workers and oppressed peoples in the U.S. and Southern Africa; 2) concrete support for liberation struggles in Southern Africa; and 3) relating these coal imports to the current crisis of imperialism. People and organization may submit a proposal for an analysis and strategy for uniting people in the South around these principles. People are urged to attend the pre-conference meeting on January 25-26 to try to consolidate the proposals submitted into several main ones to be presented at the conference. The mailing includes CALL FOR AN ORGANIZING CONFERENCE TO STOP SOUTH AFRICAN COAL! SUPPORT THE STRUGGLES OF WORKERS AND OPPRESSED PEOPLE IN THE U, S. AND THE PEOPLE OF SOUTHERN AFRICA! The Southern Company, sixth largest utility company in the U.S., has signed a three-year contract to import three million tons of coal from South Africa. In this case, importing South African coal represents an attempt by the imperialists to maintain their super-profits by propping up the racist regime of South Africa and launching a general attack on the living standards and working conditions of working people in the U.S. The mailing discusses SCEF (Southern Conference Educational Fund), the National African Liberation Support Committee, Atlanta Chapter of the African Liberation Support Committee (ALSC), Selma Project, October League, Revolutionary Union (RU), and Southern Coalition to Stop South African Coal.
