Contents: US Unions Host Solidarity Tour • Anti-Apartheid Legislation Gains • The newsletter reports on a conference followed by a U.S. tour by three union leaders from South Africa: Edward Mogane, president of the Building, Construction and Allied Workers Union of South Africa, an affiliate of the Council of Unions of South Africa (CUSA); Emma Mashinini, president of the Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union of South Africa; and Nelson Nthombeni, president of the National Union of Textile Workers, an affiliate of the Federation of South African Trade Unions (FOSATU). After their stay in New York, the three split up and visited Boston, Atlanta, Columbus (Georgia), Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Growing government repression in South Africa and rising protests in the U.S. have given new momentum to state and national anti-apartheid legislation. Bills are pending in 25 states and have already passed in six: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, Michigan, Iowa, and Nebraska. The Wisconsin Attorney General has ordered divestment of the state's education fund. Twenty-five cities have also passed various divestment measures, including New York City, Newark, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Miami, Cincinnati, Youngstown, San Francisco and Oakland. The newsletter quotes Jack Sheinkman of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU). The newsletter mentions Bill Lucy, AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees), the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU), John Banovic, the United Mine Workers (UMW), 3M workers, OCAW (Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers), Longshoremen, Local 10, the Krugerrand gold coin, economic sanctions, and the Reagan Administration.
