The mailing includes an Action Alert on amendments to the Export Administration Act soon to come before the Senate Finance Committee chaired by Senator John Heinz of Pennsylvania. The author argues that the Solarz "work codes" (based on the Sullivan principles) would provide a cover for U.S. businesses to invest even more in South Africa, which will be used to stabilize the South African economy and adversely affect Namibia and the front line states of Mozambique and Angola, as well. Adopting the "work codes" would undermine successful divestment work carried out in many cities, states, and college campuses. The mailing includes HOUSE/SENATE CONFEREES ON EXPORT BILL. The Action Alert asks people to contact Senator Heinz and demand that he support no new investments in South Africa and countries/territories controlled by South Africa, support no bank loans to South Africa and no sales of the South African Krugerrand in the U.S., and delete any reference to the Sullivan Principles or other "work codes" from proposed legislation. The mailing mentions divestment legislation, U.S. interests in South Africa and Namibia, the Black Congressional Caucus, Rep. Gray's amendment, no new investment in South Africa, Rep. Solarz's Amendment, President Reagan's policy of "constructive engagement," increasing business and cultural ties with the minority regime, apartheid, sanctions, Cuba, North Vietnam, North Korea, and Iran.
