The press release says the campaign to stop the sale of ALLEGRÍA wine, part of a boycott of all Portuguese products sold in Ithaca, has already met with initial success. Several liquor stores - Campus Liquor, College Liquor, East Hill Supply, and Ithaca Liquor - have agreed to discontinue selling ALLEGRÍA, and other stores have pledged not to place further orders with ALLEGRÍA. At Cornell, North Campus Union has decided to stop buying all Portuguese wines. On October 5, about 25 people representing a number of African countries, the Southern African Liberation Committee, the Attica Brigade, and the African Liberation Solidarity Committee picketed two stores that insisted on carrying ALLEGRIA. Demonstrators carried signs reading "FIGHT PORTUGUESE COLONIALISM - DON'T BUY PORTUGUESE PRODUCTS," "SUPPORT ANGOLA, GUINEA-BISSAU, AND MOZAHBIQUE," and ''ALLEGRIA MEANS GENOCIDE'' - an inversion of ALLEGRIA's slogan, "ALLEGRIA means happiness." Protestors also sang a "counter-commercial" attacking the ALLEGRIA jingle that has saturated local air waves. Picketing will resume next week-end and will continue until the sale of ALLEGRÍA in Ithaca is halted. The press release says ALLEGRÍA selected Ithaca as its U.S. test market. Foreign exchange earned by Portugal from its exports is used to buy U.S. weapons, which are then used against the African independence movements in Angola, Guinea-Bissau, and Mozambique.
