This is a short biography of Mr. [Tapson] Mawere, age 44, Chief Representative of the Zimbabwe African National Union in the United States, Canada and Caribbean as well as ZANU liaison to the United Nations and its specialized agencies. ZANU is described as one of the major movements for freedom, independence, and majority rule in what is presently called Rhodesia. Mawere has a long history of political involvement. ZANU is described as one of the major movements for freedom, independence, and majority rule in what is presently called Rhodesia. Mawere has a long history of political involvement. He served in Malawi from 1958-1963 sequentially as representative of the Rhodesian African National Congress, the National Democratic Party; the Zimbabwe African People's Union and the Zimbabwe African National Union. He became an active member of ZANU inside the Rhodesia in 1963 until it was declared illegal in 1965. In 1965, Mawere began studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and received a degree in agricultural engineering in 1969. At Cornell, he was president of the African Student's Association.
