The press release says two members of the Divest Now Coalition attended a hearing on June 27 of the United Nations Committee Against Apartheid. Edna Wright, a spokesperson for DNC, testified about anti-apartheid actions at University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in the last semester. Wright was one of 28 speakers from schools across the U.S. Wright's testimony discussed the longevity of this campus movement, influx of new members in Spring of 1985 and increased direct action against the University's investments in racist South Africa in Spring of 1886. The next day, Wright and Jeff Machota met with 150 anti-apartheid activists from 40 schools at a conference organized by the American Committee on Africa to discuss some problems in the anti-apartheid movement and to plan actions for next Fall. The group agreed to decentralized actions on South African political prisoners and a call for divestment/ sanctions on October 10. The release mentions David Ndaba, South African liberation movements, linking the struggles against racism in South Africa and in the U.S., and direct action.
