General • Jennifer Davis reported that Frank Montero appeared to be making progress after a hip operation. Davis also reported that the ACOA Executive Board voted in March to elect William Booth a Trustee of the Africa Fund. The ACOA Executive Board voted not to renew the terms of Jacob Clayman and Lionel Rogosin, who are unable to attend meetings. Wesley Hotchkiss reconfirmed his decision to resign as a Trustee. George Houser suggested that a replacement connected with the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries might be considered after discussions on placement of the archives. Trustee suggestions for possible future nominations included Mrs. Charles Engelhard and Professor James Mittelman of City University. Davis reviewed the annual report of the Fund for 1981 and early 1982. She noted two continuing major thrusts: analytical/educational outreach and material aid assistance conducted primarily through the liberation movements and directed towards refugee relief and also individual emergency assistance. She cited the five publications and two major research projects completed and highlighted the new report on Anglo American's North American investment that had been featured in The Washington Post. Houser and Davis travelled to Africa in 1981 to visit Africa Fund project sites and discuss future projects. By the end of the year, the Africa Fund had given a $10,000 grant for South African women through the ANC, provided over $11,000 to SWAPO Women's projects, and was preparing to ship medical supplies with a wholesale value of about $14,000 for Namibian refugees in Angola. Davis cited new research in 1982; Gail Hovey, the new Research Director, is preparing a pamphlet on U.S. corporations in Namibia. Houser will be writing a piece for the UN on the South African liberation struggle, and Richard Knight is working on a piece examining one of South Africa' s "independent" homelands, Bophuthatswana. The American Committee on Africa (ACOA) and The Africa Fund preparing to receive offers for placement of the organization's archives at an appropriate library; Houser has been working on the archives and has been instrumental in seeking their placement. Paul Irish presented the financial reports for three months. The minutes mention John Holloman, Sophia Jacobs, and Robert Stover.
