Fundraising mailing about heavy workload during the summer. Interns from Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Kalamazoo, and the University of California assisted with several new publications: a) a critical analysis of the Sullivan Principles (a "code of conduct'' approach to change in South Africa); b) a profile of the Fluor Corporation, which is building huge new oil-from-coal facilities for the South African government; c) a discussion of the case for divestment from U.S. companies with investments in South Africa; d) an analysis of the report of South Africa's Wiehahn Commission, which resulted in cosmetic changes in labor legislation that actually strengthen rather than liberalize apartheid. ACOA's campaign to stop financial assistance to South Africa has been bolstered by addition to the staff of Dumisani Kumalo, who is acting as coordinator of the Campaign to Oppose Bank Loans to South Africa. The mailing mentions Richard Knight, Spanish Sahara, military assistance to Morocco, refugees from Western Sahara now living in Algeria and a shipment of medicine to them, the House Subcommittee on Africa, NBC, the U.N.
