A biography of Elsie Carrington, a member of the Executive Board and Steering Committee of the American Committee on Africa (ACOA). Carrington became involved in the struggle for civil rights at an early age in Virginia through her work for the NAACP, and she was elected president of the NAACP chapter at Columbia University where she was taking advanced work at Teachers College. From 1957 - 1959, Carrington was President of the Bronx Chapter of the NAACP. She also worked with the NAACP's Freedom Fund Committee and Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Carrington has long worked as a volunteer for the ACOA, helping to organize and promote Africa Freedom Day celebrations, arranging hospitality teas for African students, and helping with other special projects. Carrington was one of the organizers of the Emergency Relief to Angola (ERA) program, making initial contacts with Negro medical organizations, and obtained gifts of medicines and medical supplies to ship to Angolan refugees in the Congo. Early in 1962, Carrington resigned membership on all committees except the NAACP in order to work more closely with ACOA. The document also contains the start of a biography of Andrew Norman.
