A committee of prominent jurists was formed to monitor the treason trial of South African labor leader Moses Mayekiso, General Secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA). The committee was convened at the invitation of Owen Bieber, President of the United Auto Workers (UAW), which waged a campaign urging justice in the Mayekiso case.
