The brochure says Africans cannot vote, buy or sell land, live or work where they choose, or move freely. More than five million blacks are restricted to the poorest land under South Africa's Bantustan or ''homelands" policy. They have been stripped of power and deprived of control over their lives by the elaborate network of legislation and custom called apartheid. The brochure says that the government has almost unlimited powers to detain, imprison, torture and execute people who protest against the system. There is no free speech or right to assemble. In the year before September 1985, nearly 1,000 South Africans have been killed in government-supported violence. The brochure identifies New Jersey corporations with Subsidiaries in South Africa, including: American Cyanamid Co., Automatic Switch Co., CPC International Inc., Engelhard Corp., GAF Corp., Heinemann Electric Co., Ingersoll-Rand Co., Johnson and Johnson Co., Merck and Co., Mohawk Data Sciences Corp., Nabisco Brands Inc., National Starch and Chemical Corp., Schering-Plough Corp., Squib Corp., Titanium Industries, United States Lines SA, and Warner Lambert Co. The brochure discusses poverty, profits, direct investment, bank loans, stockholdings, Nelson Mandela, political prisoners, the African National Congress (ANC), unions, strikebreaking, anti-apartheid legislation, and divestment.
