The mailing says yesterday the Brown University anti-apartheid coalition organized a sit-in at the IBM office in downtown Providence; fourteen students, including one from the University of Rhode Island and Amy Carter (the former President's daughter), were arrested in the action; today IBM's lawyers indicated that they did not want to press charges for ''business reasons". The mailing says as the National Weeks of Action begin students are clearly on the move and the protest activity will be building to a crescendo on the April 4th National Protest Day. The mailing says in order to give you some idea of the scope of planned actions, we have enclosed a press release on the Weeks of Action; in addition, there is the latest student anti-apartheid newsletter which highlights protest activity over the past month; as part of this newsletter, ACOA has prepared an analysis of the widely promoted scholarship programs for Black South Africans; we hope that this will be of use to you in countering this "positive" alternative to divestment; in the face of student pressure Administration's have also been putting forth conditional "total" divestment plans which are also examined in the newsletter. The mailing says next week in South Africa there will be a key national conference of students and parents who will be meeting to consider renewal of the school boycott which was a catalyst to the current high level of protest; the National Weeks of Action are thus arriving at a critical moment and your activities are vital in focusing attention on South Africa in the face of the continued media blackout. The mailing says please call the ACOA office from 9PM onward on Friday April 4 with reports on how your actions went on that day and throughout the Weeks of Action; we will be sending out a press release the next day.
