The press release says the largest-even coordinated protest against U.S. investment in South Africa will occur on October 11 in over 25 major U.S. cities and on 100 campuses. October 11 is the International Day For Southern African Political Prisoners, and silent vigils for the release of South African and Namibian political prisoners will be held simultaneously across the country. The American Committee on Africa initiated the protest day, which has catalyzed new activity and coordination between community and campus groups. The press release lists many planned activities by diverse organizations, including labor and religious groups. Actions will take place in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C. Targets vary in different locales, including banks making loans to South Africa, stores selling Krugerrands, states and universities that have not divested, South African consulates, South African exports arriving at ports, and the U.S. policy of constructive engagement. Liberation movement representatives and South Africa labor union representatives will speak at some events. There will also be actions in Canada and Sweden.
