The document says the Hawaii Committee for Africa, a grassroots group interested in social justice in South Africa, coordinated a week of public information activities in September and October that included two lunch hour forums at the UH Campus Center attended by over 250 people, a Divestment Dance at the off-campus Wesley Center that drew over 150 participants, and lobbying for a City Council resolution designating October 13 Anti-Apartheid Day in Honolulu; over 180 people turned out for an Anti-Apartheid demonstration in support of the resolution; Hawaii Alliance volunteers assisted in making many of the signs which were picked up by three of the four TV stations. The document says since October, activity was focused on a campaign to persuade unions and pension fund managers to remove funds invested in corporations doing business in South Africa; in Hawaii, about $117 million of the Government worker's pension funds are invested in corporations doing business with S. Africa; this is only 2% of the total book value of pension fund investments; to date, groups that have taken a strong stand for divestment include the HSTA (teacher's union), UPGA (UH Professor's union), the Hawaii Council of Churches, the Episcopal Ministry and the United Church of Christ Conference; Anti-Apartheid resolutions have been adopted by the United Nations Association, Hawaii Division, the YWCA, and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The document says for the Martin Luther King National memorial day set for January 20, the ,Hawaii Committee for Africa is sponsoring a group to carry the message: "Free South Africa - Abolish Apartheid," in the parade which will start at Ft. DeRussy and end at Kapiolani Park; volunteers are welcome and may call for more information.
