The press release announces a demonstration at the State Capitol in support of divestment of State Pension funds from South Africa-related stocks. Hawaii groups supporting divestment include the Hawaii Council of Churches, United Church of Christ Conference, American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), NAACP-Hawaii, HGEA, UPW, UPGA, OHA, University of Hawaii (UH) Faculty Senate, ASUH, UH Regents, YWCA-Hawaii, Unitarians of Hawaii, Catholic Diocese, and ILWU. Speakers at the rally will be Rev. John Norris, Executive Co-Coordinator of the Hawaii Council of Churches, and Professor Howard E. Johnson, retired Professor of Sociology and World War II Veteran. Johnson earned the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters and has been a leader of the Civil Rights movement since the 1930's.The press release says the only major testimony against divestment at a hearing in the State Senate was submitted by State Retirement fund staffs who used as their "testimony" a South African government generated document; recognizing the credibility-gap of this, the Senate adopted its strong divestment resolution. The Hawaii Board of Education and Honolulu City Council already have adopted resolutions calling for divestment. The press release says the Hawaii Committee for Africa, which is associated with the American Committee on Africa, is coordinating the rally.
