The press release says that, at an emergency meeting held over the weekend, local politicians, community and church leaders, and labor, peace and justice groups called for a total ban on trade with South Africa. Support was promised for legislative and nonviolent actions to carry out this commitment. The ban is urged in light of the discovery of the use of South African steel in the Seattle Metro bus tunnel construction and concern over the shipment of uranium hexafluoride through this community to Hanford. Uranium hexafluoride is a compressed radioactive gas produced from ore mined in South African-occupied Namibia. Advanced Nuclear Fuels of Bellevue, Washington has requested permission from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a shipment of uranium hexafluoride, due to arrive October 15, 1987. This clearly violates the intent of the Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986. The press release says uranium hexafluoride caused a fatal accident in Oklahoma last year. The statement is endorsed by Tom Buchanan, Lee Carter, Randolph Carter, Bill Clifford, Patricia Donohue, Maryamu Eltayeb, Jim Gunsolus, Marc Lampson, Vanessa E. Langston, Congressman Mike Lowry, Garry Prince, Marjorie Prince, Councilman Norm Rice, Charles Rolland, Eddie Rye, Jr., Bob Santos, Jeri Ware, and Rep. Jesse Wineberry. The press release discusses State Representative Jesse Wineberry, City Councilman Norm Rice, South African products, the Metro Council, Randy Carter, and Mt. Zion Church. [Note: The press release appears that at the time the press release was released the name Coalition Against South African Trade had not yet been adopted.]
