Mailing with a copy of the full-page ad with a Law Day Statement in Opposition to Apartheid. The mailing is signed by Robert Abrams, Attorney General of the State of New York; Haywood Burns, Vice Provost and Dean for Urban & Legal Programs at CCNY (City University of New York); Alexander Forger, Esq.; Margaret Forder, Executive Director of Asian Legal Defense Fund; Robert B. McKay, Professor of Law at New York University; and James M. Narbit, Associate Director Counsel of NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. The mailing says the ad, from the New York Law Journal of May 1, shows the broad support in the legal community for the anti-apartheid struggle. The mailing says the continued killings in South Africa remind us that people who support the rule of law need to heighten their opposition to the Reagan Administration's policy of "constructive engagement" and the role that policy plays in perpetuating injustice in South Africa. The mailing says the proposed Anti-Apartheid Act of 1985 (HR 1460, S635), which has passed the House of Representatives, would forbid new U.S. investment in South Africa, new loans to the South African government, American computer sales to the South African public sector, and sales of South African Krugerrands in this country. The mailing invites people to a legal community lobbying day in Washington, D.C., co-sponsored by the Legal Committee Against Apartheid in New York, Lawyers Against Apartheid in Washington, and the Southern Africa Project of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The mailing says the group will meet at the Rayburn House Office Building at noon for a seminar about the contents of the bill and lobbying techniques, have lunch together, meet with members of Congress to discuss the bill, and if time permits, join the daily demonstration at the South African Embassy. The mailing says if you can't attend the lobby day, please write the U.S. Senators from New York to urge them to support the anti-apartheid bill that has passed the House of Representatives. The mailing says that, in July and continuing on into the fall, the Legal Committee Against Apartheid and other groups will focus efforts on the divestment bill before the New York State Legislature.
