Mailing to members of the New York legal community signed by Robert Abrams, Attorney General, State of New York; Haywood Burns, Co-Chair, National Conference of Black Lawyers; Barbara Dudley, Executive Director, National Lawyers Guild; and Jean Schneider, ALAA, District 64, UAW. The letter asks people to add their name to LAW DAY STATEMENT IN OPPOSITION TO APARTHEID, which will appear in the New York Law Journal on Law Day, May 1. The mailing says the South African government is increasing its repression of anti-apartheid organizations and violence against peaceful protesters. Also, the treason charges against 16 leaders of the United Democratic Front and more than two dozen murders at the hands of South African soldiers underscore the need to continue the public outcry against apartheid. The mailing discusses state terrorism against the Black majority, constructive engagement, South Africa's illegal occupation of Namibia, United Nations resolutions, justice and the rule of law. [Note: ALAA is apparently the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys.]
