Prepared statement of Gay J. McDougall, Director, Southern Africa Project, Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, to deliver to the African Group at the United Nations. The statement expresses support for the nine Black South Africans who have been sentenced in what has come to be known as the "Silverton Siege Trial" and also charges South Africa with yet another violation of international law. The Southern Africa Project of the Lawyers Committee For Civil Rights Under Law pledges its resources to support international law and the restoration of the rule of law in South Africa. We intend a vigorous campaign against sentences such as the ones in the Silverton Siege trial. The statement discusses the Special Committee Against Apartheid, Prisoner of War status, South African Political Prisoners, the Geneva Conventions of 1949, the Geneva Convention of 1949 Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, self-determination, liberation movements of South Africa, a sentence of death, state security, military and political training, military operations outside the scope of criminal prosecution, the Pretoria 9, the execution of Solomon Mahlangu, James Mange, sentencing to death of a Namibian farmworker, armed guerillas, and human rights.
