Matuzolele Mulato expresses gratitude to the Pan-African Liberation Committee for raising the issue of Gulf's involvement in the Portuguese-held territory of Angola, to the African people in the U.S. Mulato says the conditions of the Africans in Angola have always been deplorable and criticizes the colonial system of "assimilacao" or assimilation. The statement also criticizes the system of forced labor, under which Africans must fulfill two to five years of labor without pay in white man's plantation or in public menial jobs. Angolans rose against Portuguese colonial domination in 1961. The ten-year struggle for liberation has been a period of intensive confrontation both inside and abroad. The statement says inside the country the Nationalists have succeeded in capturing a good portion of territory. The statement says Portugal's ability to resist the Nationalists for so long has been facilitated by massive financial and material aid from Western countries, particularly the U.S., Great Britain, West German, and France. The statement also discusses freedom of expression, imprisonment, torture, tax, and decolonization.
