The press statement says Action Against Apartheid is holding an indefinite "Fast for Divestment" which begins the morning of Friday, May 8, 1987, and of which the purpose is to demand that the UNC BOE divest all holdings in South Africa and Namibia according to the guidelines developed by TransAfrica, the American Committee on Africa, The Washington Office on Africa, and other respected anti-apartheid organizations. The press statement says one of the most murderous, yet lest well-known effects of apartheid it the massive effects of its war against the Southern Africa people, particularly the Frontline States, Mozambique and Angola; through both direct military intervention, and through the support of surrogate forces, UNITA in Angola, and Renamo in Mozambique, South Africa has raised the child mortality rates in Angola and Mozambique to the highest levels in the world, according to UNICEF figures published in December of 1986; this "destabilization campaign" would not be possible without the aid of foreign companies such as Shell, which not only supplies the regime with oil despite a UN-imposed embargo, but also pats its white employees supplementary wages to fight in the South African Army, and IBM which provides vital computer technology and servicing. The press statement discusses malnutrition, Bantustans, UNC (University of North Carolina), BOE (Board of Endowment), the American Committee on Africa (ACOA), and the Washington Office on Africa (WOA).
