The mailing reports on the vigil held on June 16, 1977 at the Cathedral of St. Mary the Virgin in Johannesburg to commemorate the young Blacks who died during the children's uprising in Soweto and throughout South Africa the year before. The mailing says many prominent South Africans were due to speak, but the Minister of Justice, Police and Prisons, James T. Kruger, took the unusual step of ruling that only bona fide members of the clergy could speak. The mailing includes one of the statements that was disallowed, by Sally Motlana. The mailing discusses the South African Council of Churches (SACC), the All Africa Conference of Churches, Morris Isaacson High School, St. Paul's Church, the Council of the Anglican Diocese in Johannesburg, the U.S. State Department, the Writers' Association of South Africa (WASA), influx control, pass laws, Nthato Motlana, the Committee of Ten, the South African security police, land, the Urban Bantu Councils, Parliament, Bantu Education, detention, banning orders, arrest without trial, banishment, and deportation.
