The press release says 10 prominent American judges and lawyers have taken out full-page ads in the Johannesburg Star (4-21) and the Cape Times (4-20) putting the apartheid government on notice they are monitoring a major treason trial there. The ads focus on the case of Moses Mayekiso, one of South African most prominent black trade union leaders. The press release says Mayekiso, General Secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), is currently on trial with four other defendants on charges of treason, subversion, and sedition related to organizing efforts to improve conditions in Alexandra, a black township outside Johannesburg. The press release says the American Committee of Jurists monitoring Mayekiso's case was convened at the invitation of Owen Bieber, President of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. The members of the group are Griffin B. Bell, William T. Coleman, Jr., Marvin E. Frankel, Arthur J. Goldberg, Elizabeth Hotlzman, Damon J. Keith, Abner J. Mikva, Eleanor Holms Norton, Stephen Reinhardt, and Benno C. Schmidt, Jr. The press release says contact Don Stillman. The press release discusses Business Day, the Argus group, rent and consumer boycotts, detention, the death penalty, and hanging.
