The mailing says in April 1985, officials and rank and file members of a number of trade unions came together to form the Philadelphia Area Labor Against Apartheid Committee Against Apartheid; this was accomplished with the participation of over 25 local and regional unions, such as the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, Service Employees International Union Local 668, AFSCME District Councils #33 and #47, and the Hospital Workers Union. The mailing says the Committee is an independent organization formed to support the new independent "black unions" in South Africa, and to help educate the U.S. trade union movement and the American people about the nature of apartheid; the Labor Committee works with other groups as part of a broad-based anti-apartheid coalition named after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The mailing invites people to attend the next meeting of the Philadelphia Area Labor Against Apartheid Committee on Wednesday, October 7 at the Amalgamated Center. The mailing asks people to fill out the enclosed endorsement card and return it to the Committee. The mailing includes PHILADELPHIA AREA LABOR AGAINST APARTHEID COMMITTEE AGAINST APARTHEID PRINCIPLES ADOPTED ON MAY 16, 1986. The mailing includes a leaflet on one side with an article South African Labor Leaders Charged with HIGH TREASON reprinted from the newsletter Labor Against Apartheid and a petition Human Rights Are Not High Treason!
