Mailing of the Unlock Apartheid's Jails campaign notes that it soon will be one year since the deadline for the release of all political prisoners passed unmet. Nelson Mandela walked out of jail two years ago, but some of his colleagues still remain in jail, and the government continues to deny that any political prisoners remain despite evidence to the contrary by human rights groups both in South Africa and abroad. The mailing says the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) represents the best hope for a peaceful start to the beginning of the process of creating a new South Africa. The mailing asks people to write letters of solidarity and encouragement to members of CODESA Working Group 1 including Kader Asmal, African National Congress (ANC); Jacob Zuma, ANC; P.G. Soal, Democratic Party; E. Samuels, Labour Party; Ronnie Kasrils, S.A. Communist Party (SACP); Joe Modise, ANC; David Dalling, Democratic Party; Chris April, Labour Party; and Essop Pahad, SACP. The mailing includes SUMMARY REPORT ON REPRESSION FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH 1992 and PRESS SUMMARY ON WEEKLY REPRESSION REPORT FROM 26/03/92 TO 01/04/92. The mailing discusses political trials and imprisonment, repression, violence, train attacks, political arrests, death sentences, death row, Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), AZAPO, vigilante-related actions, security force actions, the banning of gatherings, and Inkatha.
