Invitation inviting people to attend a celebration of the publication of the book I Will Go Singing: The Life and Struggle for Freedom in South Africa of Walter Sisulu by George M. Houser, Executive Director Emeritus, American Committee on Africa and The Africa Fund and Herbert Shore, Professor Emeritus of the University of Southern California on Thursday, March 29, 2001 at the home of Jennifer Davis. The invitation says Come meet: South African Ambassador Sheila Sisulu, Salih Booker and George Houser. The invitation says the book, in a limited edition, is based on the memories of Walter Sisulu, former Secretary General of the African National Congress of South Africa, Nelson Mandela's mentor and his companion in the struggle for freedom and for 26 years in prison; to date, this is the only book-length record of Sisulu's own thoughts and remembrances; it makes clear Why Walter Sisulu is looked upon by his peers as the "kingpin in the struggle against apartheid, who always seemed to know just what strategies and tactics were needed to mobilize and organize masses of people for action." The invitation says through the 236 pages of this volume, the fascinating life of Sisulu is spelled out from his birth and early life in the rural Transkei his introduction to Johannesburg as a mine worker his discovery of the ANC his first meeting with Nelson Mandela his role in the seminal events which led to the birth of a free South Africa - the nonviolent Defiance Campaign, the Treason Trial, the many campaigns against the hated pass laws, his arrest at Rivonia, the subsequent trial which led to his life sentence, and events in the Robben Island prison.
