The memorandum says the divestment hearing before the House Civil Rights Committee is on! The hearing will be 10:30 am Tuesday, October 8 in Room 420 in the Capitol Building. The mailing says this hearing will start the divestment legislation moving through the legislative process; we are gaining support throughout the state, but the opposition has begun lobbying as well; that means we must redouble our efforts to swing public opinion in support of the legislation and to convince legislators that divestment is effective action against apartheid which will not harm the pension funds. The memorandum asks people to lobby their legislator, send letters of support to their local newspaper, and convince the organization(s) in which they are active to endorse the divestment legislation. The memorandum says we will have a MichDivest meeting following the hearing; please come to the hearing and to the meeting to help plan our legislative campaign.
