Statement at the public comment session of the Michigan State University (MSU) Board of Trustees meeting. The statement says eight years ago the MSU Board of Trustees took a historic step in opposing apartheid practices by divesting approximately $8 million dollars in corporations operating in South Africa. MSU was the first major educational institution to take such a strong stand in supporting human rights. The statement says students, faculty, and administrators take pride in MSU's stand against apartheid and share that pride with their counterparts at other universities and colleges, but MSU's image is tainted, because MSU has not fully completed its pledge of divestment in that the MSU Foundation presently has approximately $500,000 invested in corporations that operate in South Africa. The statement discusses the State Educational Divestiture Law of 1980 and Western Michigan University.
