Letter to Mr. Michael Illich, Opinion Editor of The State News, published by students at Michigan State University (MSU). The letter says, in response to the cartoon by Jeff Coppele, entitled "Overlooking of the SALC Shanty," in the December 1 issue, SALC is one of 13 campus organizations that participated in the Shanty Coalition, along with ASMSU, Coalition Against Racism and Apartheid on Campus, Committee for Education on Latin America, Democratic Socialists of America, East Lansing Peace Education Center, Middle East Awareness Committee, MSU Great Issues, MSU NAACP, Office of Black Affairs, Phi Beta Sigma, and RHA. The letter says the shanty was staffed 24 hours a day for 9 days. Its purpose was to demonstrate the Coalition's belief that the MSU Foundation should divest from the apartheid regime of South Africa and the MSU Trustees should instruct the Foundation to do so. The letter summarizes some of SALC's record of the past eight years. The letter discusses the MSU Board of Trustees, State Senator Vaughn's resolution supporting sanctions, stocks in corporations that invest in South Africa, banks making loans to South Africa, State Representative Virgil Smith's Bill (Public Act 325), State Representative Perry Bullard's Bill (Public Act 512), and the removal of the McGoff name from the Festival Stage in the Wharton Center.
