Reprint from the December 1986 Peace Education Center (PEC) newsletter. The article says the Southern Africa Liberation Committee (SALC) joined a coalition to build a South African shanty at the Administration Building on the Michigan State University (MSU) campus during Nov. 17-26. Other coalition members are Associated Students of MSU (ASMSU), Coalition Against Racism and Apartheid on Campus (CARAC), CELA, DSA, ELPEC, GUPS, MEAC, MSU Great Issues, MSU NAACP, MSU OBA, MSU RHA, and Phi Beta Sigma. The shanty has generated a lot of interest and only one middle-of-the-night attack. Rev. Peter Dougherty gave the initial blessing for the protection of the black people of South Africa and the shanty, and Rev. Chad Donghi of Zimbabwe and Rev. Jon Lacey of United Ministries in Higher Education gave subsequent blessings. The article says the shanty members have collected more than a 1,000 petition signatures requesting the MSU Foundation to divest. Lacey will also request the Trustees to instruct the Foundation to divest; the Trustees' meeting is scheduled on Dec. 12, the last day of finals, so fewer students will be here. The article asks people to join a picket at the, MSU Administration Building on Dec. 12. The article discusses the Sullivan Principles, and the State of Michigan divestiture law for educational institution. [Note: SALC was a task force of PEC as well as being an MSU student organization.]
