Memorandum sent to the Association of Concerned Africa Scholars (ACAS) Executive Board and Other Members on the TIAA-CREF Divestment Campaign. The memo says the TIAA/CREF divestment campaign has publicly emerged, in an advertisement and article in the October 30 Chronicle of Higher Education. The memo says the planning committee that has developed the campaign thus far includes Dean James Breeden at the Tucker Foundation at Dartmouth (who is coordinating the effort); Breeden's associate Karen Pinto; Robert Zevin of U.S. Trust Co.; Jennifer Davis at ACOA; and, for ACAS, Willard Johnson, David Wiley and Christine Root. The memorandum includes a copy of the published advertisement, WHAT IS OUR MONEY DOING IN SOUTH AFRICA? and a policy statement, A CALL FOR TIAA-CREF ACTION AGAINST APARTHEID. It discusses the African National Congress (ANC), apartheid, African Studies Association (ASA), Donna Shalala, Teachers' Insurance and Annuity Association - College Retirement Equities Funds (TIAA-CREF), political detainees and prisoners, Nelson Mandela, political rights, and citizenship.
