Petition demanding that the California State Legislature, the Governor, the Board of Pension Commissioners, and the UC Board of Regents withdraw tax dollars, UC endowments, and pension funds from all corporations doing business in or with the Republic of South Africa. The petition says this is a critical period in South African people's struggle against apartheid, a brutal system of legalized racism which maintains the rule of a white minority regime; U.S. corporations prop up and profit from this system, which keeps South Africa's black majority living in poverty with an income a fraction of that of whites. The petition says the State of California has over 2 1/2 billion dollars, derived from state employees' payroll deductions and tax revenues, invested in companies doing business in the Republic of South Africa. The petition discusses employees' pension funds, the Regents of the University of California, the California Public Employees' Retirement System and the state Teachers' Retirement System. [Note: In 1986 California passed divestment legislation so this petition apparently precedes passage of that legislation.]
