The mailing say this spring the major legislative issue on southern Africa that we are working on is a campaign to reinstate United States compliance with United Nations sanctions against the illegal white regime in Rhodesia; a critical first step in the campaign must be the introduction of legislation aimed at repealing the Byrd Amendment which initiated the legalized sanctions breaking. The mailing says last year Senator Gale McGee's attempt to reverse the sanctions breaking amendment was narrowly defeated in the Senate due in large part to the lack of White House support for the measure. The mailing says tensions inside Rhodesia are mounting rapidly; the liberation movements have once again moved into open attack on the regime, which is responding with draconian measures against the population. The mailing asks people to write Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, now Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Africa of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, urging him to act now to repeal the Byrd Amendment.
