Mailing advocating for strong sanctions and raising funds for this campaign. Archbishop Tutu is quoted in favor of effective economic sanctions against South Africa. The House of Representatives is considering a bill introduced by Rep. Ron Dellums and Senator Alan Cranston that would end all U.S. investment in South Africa. On June 9, ACOA Projects Director Rob Jones testified in favor of this bill before the House Ways and Means Committee. An outpouring of public support for the bill is needed aimed at Senators, Representatives, and Presidential candidates. The American Committee on Africa (ACOA) is alerting Americans to the need for action on sanctions. ACOA staff members have been speaking to churches and synagogues, local unions, and campus groups throughout the country. ACOA communicates with the media and with the network of public officials and community leaders with whom it has worked to win divestment action in 23 states and more than 70 cities. People are asked to urge their members of Congress to support the Dellums-Cranston sanctions bill, HR 1580 and S 2378 and to contribute to ACOA to support outreach on this issue. [Note: The mailing says "Dear Friend of ACOA" but is on letterhead of The Africa Fund.]
