Funding appeal from The Africa Fund describes a funeral held for a community leader in Katlehong township who had been murdered by the police. Just as mourners left the cemetery, police opened fire. A Red Cross medic tried to reach the wounded but was driven back by an intense burst of gunfire; finally after the police withdrew and allowed people to be taken to the hospital or the morgue. The mailing discusses right-wing vigilantes, security forces, apartheid, Bantustan leaders, the South African Human Rights Commission, political violence, and progress towards democracy.
