Unlock Apartheid's Jails campaign. The mailing says the South African Parliament has opened and the Population Registration Act, the Land Act and the Group Areas Act have been targeted for elimination. The mailing says in 1990 the Urban Foundation estimated that 7 million people of mixed races lived in squatter camps, garages or backyard shacks built of wood; the squatters (or informal settlers) movement dates back to 1890 when white settlers obtained huge tracts of rural land, producing in the process a huge landless population. The mailing discusses F.W. de Klerk, apartheid, a severe housing shortage, tribal reserves of "homelands", and forced removals.
