The mailing announces the June 16-19 National Days of Action commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising. The Bush administration has repeatedly stated that it will lift or modify sanctions against South Africa this summer. This is not the time to consider lifting sanctions; the Pretoria government is refusing to take greater steps towards ending politically motivated violence and it is blatantly mishandling release of political prisoners. People are urged to hold a special church service on Soweto Day, June 16, and to hold other community events during the week. June 19 is designated as a national lobby day, when people are asked to send a delegation to Congressmembers' district offices. The mailing includes a leaflet, "Join Us in Commemorating the 15th Anniversary of South Africa's Soweto Uprising." The leaflet states that the campaign is sponsored by the Southern Africa Working Group, a coalition of religious, trade union and human rights groups lobbying to maintain U.S. pressure against South Africa. The mailing mentions Black South African students, the African National Congress (ANC), the South African Council of Churches (SACC), trade unions, the European Economic Community, and Nelson Mandela.
