The mailing says vigilante violence occurred again with the attack on the home of Bishop Mdwandwe; as if to underline what the people in the townships know, the South African Police (SAP) cooperated with the vigilante gangs by arresting the bishop for public violence. The mailing says in the early hours of yesterday morning, security branch officers raided a number of homes in the Cape Town area and put into detention some 15 to 20 people; all are being held under section 29 of the Internal Security Act. The mailing asks people to send protests to Louis Le Grange, Minister of Law and Order; Brigadier Swart, Caledon Square Police Station; and Secretary George Shultz, Department of State. The mailing reprints a newspaper article "S. African Bishop Jailed". The mailing says Basil van Rensburg is a South African and Roman Catholic priest with a parish in District 6, Cape Town; he is at present on a sabbatical studying at Notre Dame University; he is in the 17th day of a fast (water only) to press the elite University of Notre Dame to divest its holdings in companies operating in South Africa. The mailing asks people to send messages of support to Father Basil van Rensburg. The mailing says Notre Dame's president, the Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, should receive messates as well urging total divestment. The mailing discusses Cecil Esau, the churches urban planning commission, Quinton Michaels, Deborah Michaels, Herman Dyers, Charles Ebdon, Leslie Logan, Zingisice Nkhuhlwa, Zwelesha Nakozoma, the United Democratic Front (UDF), Bishop Desmond Tutu, the black township of Alexandra, street defense committees, police violence against activists, black vigilantes, policemen, and Sigisbert Ndwandwe.
